IP is often overlooked in early stages of the startup journey, but it is critical that businesses have plans in place to protect their IP, especially as this is often the first thing that investors will ask about. As a rough guide, a typical patent application may cost £3,000- £10,000 to draft and file, depending primarily on the complexity of the invention and if patent protection is desired in a number of different countries. For example, a simple mechanical invention might fall at the lower end of the scale, whereas the cost of a complex invention would be higher.
